Births

Sarah Ann Uttley was born in Elmira, Ontario on November 25, 1861. She was the third of seven children and the first daughter of Nathan Uttley and Lucinda Randall.

[Bible Entry]

The date comes from two sources. The Births page of the Family Bible reads "Sarah Ann Uttley Born Nov(br) 25 1861" which agrees with her baptism record below.

Sarah Ann was baptized at St John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Berlin on the same day with her older brother John Robert as recorded in the church records:

   Baptism: Sarah Ann
   Born: Nov 25, 1861
   Baptized: Sept 14, 1862
   Parents: Lucy Uttley
                 Nathan Uttley, farmer Elmira
   Sponsors: Charlotte Linder
                 L[ucy] Uttley
                 Wm Linders
   Priest: E.R. Stinson

The Census of 1871 lists Sarah as a girl of age 9 with the rest of her family in Elmira.

Robert Cook was born in Canada in about November 1858 as recorded in the 1901 American Census. His parents, Solomon Cook and Cordelia Parker were living in Cayuga, Ontario in 1851. By 1861 Solomon was a saloonkeeper in Strathroy, Ontario and he and Cordelia had a family of six children including Robert at age 3. It is probable that Robert was born in Strathroy.

Marriage Record

No record has yet been found of the marriage of Sarah Ann to Robert Cook. The census of 1881 tells us the couple was already married and they are living in Woolwich Township. Robert has the occupation of a horse trainer. She is just 19 years old so it seems unlikely they would have been married earlier than the previous year.

Sarah Cook and her husband Robert of Elmira were the witnesses to the marriage of Sarah's sister Mary Jane to Anthony Varley on March 7, 1882 in Hawkesville. Sarah Cook was again a witness at a marriage when her brother John R. and Catherine Birmingham wed on April 20, 1882 in Elmira.

The Michigan State Census of 1894 shows the family of Robert and Sarah Ann Cook living in Iosco County with four of their children: Truman, Leon, Robert and William. The United States Census in 1900 lists Sarah Ann living in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan with her son Robert in the home of a sister-in-law and Robert living in Port Huron, Michigan with his son Leon in the home of a brother-in-law. The same census gives 1885 as the year the couple emmigrated from Canada.
